William R. Dutch, 79
LYNN — William R. “Coach” Dutch, age 79, of Lynn, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness. He was the loving and devoted husband of Patricia (Law) Dutch, with whom he shared more than 34 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn in 1939, Bill was the son of the late James L. and Hazel (Ritchie) Dutch. He was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from Lynn Trade in 1958. He later went on to receive a certificate at Palm Beach Community College Law Enforcement Academy.
From 1980-1983 he worked at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and from 1984-1986 at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department before returning to Massachusetts and working as a dispatcher for the Massachusetts Environmental Police for many years.
Bill was “Coach” to many youth across the city. He was part of the coaching staff at Lynn English serving their football, basketball and baseball teams and was a volunteer at East Lynn Pop Warner from 1972-1978. He enjoyed softball, golf and bowling.
He was a former player and umpire at Lynn Softball Slow Pitch, was a member at Tony C’s Inner Club in Nahant for more than 10 years and bowled in leagues throughout Lynn for many years. Once retired, he served as a crossing guard in Lynn from 2004-2017.
Bill had a special love for his recliner, remote and television, always watching his beloved Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics. Friends and family knew that Christmas was his favorite holiday and he was affectionately known as “The Grinch.” He enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially on cruises and will be missed by all who knew him. Bill will be especially missed by his loving dogs Molly Malone and Maggie McPhee and was predeceased by his beloved dogs Jenna and Cara.
In addition to his loving wife Pat, Bill is survived by his children, James D. Dutch of Jefferson City, La., John S. Pepernik of Swampscott, Audrey Dutch Twomey and her husband Bryan of Lawrence, Dannielle Dutch Lazzaro and her husband Anthony of Haverhill, Lori J. Dutch of Exeter, N.H., Caryl A. Dutch of Salem, Allison L. Dutch of Danvers and Tracy Griffin and her husband Tim of Bradford; his grandchildren, Anthony Fiory IV and his wife Michelle of Peabody, Jonathan W. Fiory of Peabody, Chazz James Dutch of Danvers, Meagan Burchstead of Denver, Colo., Melissa Pepernik Jones of Lowell and Cadia Rae Griffin of Bradford; his beloved great-granddaughter, Cali Eleanor Fiory; his siblings, Carol Cyr and her husband Donald of Arlington, Va., Lonna Vavrinek and her fiancé Ronald Bransfield of Tecumseh, Mich., and Richard Davis of Lynn, and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his siblings Walter and Norman Davis, Elaine Priest, June Vignola and Alice Dutch and his former wife Dolores Johnson.
Service information: A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn, at 7 p.m. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 4-7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
