Rev. John E. Sassani, 64

NEWTON — Rev. John E. Sassani, 64, of Newton, formerly of Swampscott, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019 after a brief illness.

Born in Lynn to Nicholas and the late Natalie A. (Cashman) Sassani, he was raised in Swampscott. Father John was a 1972 graduate of St. John’s Prep in Danvers and a 1976 graduate of St. John Seminary in Brighton. He continued his post-graduate studies at North American College in Rome and Creighton University where he earned his master’s degree in Divinity.

Father John served at Sacred Heart parish Roslindale, St. John the Evangelist Winthrop, St. John the Evangelist Newton, St. Theresa of Lisieux Sherbourne. Father Sassani was the director of the Office of Spiritual Development for the Archdiocese of Boston, and authored several books throughout his ministry. From 2006 until his death, Father Sassani was pastor of Our Lady Help of Christians and Sacred Heart Parish of Newton.

Father John is survived by his father, Nicholas Sassani; his sister, Martha A. Lausier; nephews, Matthew S. Lausier and his wife Caitlin, Michael L. Lausier and his wife Janie, Mark N. Lausier; niece, Megan E. Toborg; three grand nephews, Michael and Wesley Toborg and Matthew Lausier Jr.; aunts, C. Patricia Cashman,  Mary M. Cullin, as well as many cousins. He was predeceased by uncles Dr. Edward L. Cashman Jr., Dr. John Sassani, Michael Sassani, aunts Anna Petrone, and Frances Sassani.

Service information: Father John will lie in repose in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington St., Newton, on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 from 2-5 p.m., followed by a Mass at 5 p.m. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 2-6 p.m. at SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A). A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott, followed by burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
