Paul S. English, 81

NAHANT — Mr. Paul S. English, 81 years, of Nahant, died on Friday, Aug. 10, 2017, at home after a long illness. He is the husband of Mrs. Mary Jane (Eagan) English.

He was born in Lynn, the son of the late William and Frances E. (Tombeno) English. He was raised in Nahant and has lived in Nahant all of his life. He was a 1953 graduate of Lynn English High School.

Paul was a salesman for Spaulding Sporting Goods for 38 years. Paul had completed the Jordan Marsh Executive Training Program. He was a former member of the Salem Country Club, a member of the Nahant Council, Knights of Columbus.

Paul was active in Nahant civic affairs. He was the elected Constable of Nahant from 1984-2012. During this period, Paul was often happy to report that he had the highest vote total of any elected official on the ballot. Paul served on the Nahant Planning Board from 1970-1976 and as ADA Coordinator from 2000-2013. During the ’60s and ’70s, Paul served as a reserve police officer, call firefighter, and radio dispatcher for the fire department. He also served as a trustee of the Nahant Firefighters’ Relief Fund for almost 50 years.

Paul loved meeting Nahanters, new and old, and, thus, thoroughly enjoyed his appointment as wharfinger for the Town of Nahant from 1982-2015 as well as being a member of the Harbor and Marine Advisory Committee.

Paul was an avid skeet shooter as well as enjoying duck hunting, He was a member of the Danvers Fish and Game Club, a member of the Ipswich Fish and Game Club and a member of the Minuteman Sportsman Club. In addition Paul was a boating enthusiast, an avid fisherman and lobsterman. He was a star Texas Holdem Player, “a man about town” and a “Jack of all trades.” Paul was a true townie and loved Nahant. He was a wealth of information and history about the town and was consulted by researchers for the Nahant Historical Society and students at the Johnson School completing reports.

In addition to his wife, Mary Jane, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, he leaves a son, Paul S. English Jr. of Delray Beach, Fla.; a brother, William F. English Jr. and his wife Beverly of Nahant; and several nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late Anne English Santucci and uncle of the late David English.

Service information: His memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant, followed by burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Memorial visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
