PEABODY — Neal G. Onos, 79, a longtime resident of Peabody, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 16, 2020.
Born in South Gate, Calif., to the late Cornelius and Jacoba (Hagoort) Onos, Neal was the cherished husband of Mildred “Millie” (Moriarty) Onos for 58 years. He was the most devoted husband and father and enjoyed every moment spent with his family.
Neal was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School with the Class of 1958. He settled in Peabody and worked for Citrus Fruit Juice Co. and then for Pepperidge Farm as a bread distributor for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed golfing and skiing, and was a proud member of the Lynn Snow Chasers ski club. Most of all he was a family man. He coached basketball, softball and little league for his children and their friends. He enjoyed camping trips to his favorite spot on the Saco River in New Hampshire and across the country. He was a masterful joke-teller and honest to a fault.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Millie, his children, Julie Spang and her husband Dave, Kristen Eriksen and her husband Paul, Jodi O’Neill and her husband Chris, Marcy Mason and her husband Tom, Erin Buckley and her husband Eric, and Neal Onos and his wife Colleen. He also leaves behind his brother, Jerry Onos and his late wife Diane; and his sister and brother-in-law, Fran and Bill Martel; and his cherished grandchildren, Shannon Spang, Charlotte, Ben, Austin and Cody Eriksen, Brendan, Tim and Colin O’Neill, Kate and Sam Mason, Ryan, Sarah, Luke, and the late Jenna Buckley, and Jaydn and Landon Onos. His many nieces and nephews also survive him, as well as many cherished friends.
Neal’s family would like to thank the staff from his hospital and rehab visits, and especially the VNA hospice staff that helped him through his last weeks so he could rest in his favorite place — his home.
Service information: Due to recent events, funeral services and interment were held privately. The family is looking forward to celebrating in grand “Onos” style with a memorial Mass and Celebration of Life soon. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or My Brother’s Table, 98 Willow St., Lynn, MA 01901 are appreciated.
