Michael J. McMahon, 74
Michael J. McMahon, age 74, of Salem and formerly of Ipswich passed away at home on Thursday, February 7, 2019 following a lengthy illness. He was the loving and devoted husband of Sandra (Belleau) McMahon and the late Judith (Boudreau) McMahon who predeceased him in 1985. Born in Beverly, Michael was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Norton) McMahon and son-in-law of the late Armand Blais. He attended St. Mary’s Grammar School, Beverly and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Lynn in 1962. Following graduation, Michael enlisted in the United States Air Force and was an Aerial Photographer Reconnaissance interpreter serving during Vietnam. He worked as a Store Manager for Star Market at many locations including the Boston St., and State St., locations, Lynn until he retired in 1994. He was an active parishioner of St. Pius V Church, Lynn, and was a member of the VFW Post 1093, Ipswich. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, skiing, creating model ships and was an avid sports enthusiast. He loved gardening and had a vast collection of lawn ornaments. He also enjoyed camping and spent many summers at the Mit-Te-Jo Campground in Milton, N.H. Michael was a handyman and was especially skilled at woodworking and designing such things as cabinets and other beautiful pieces. He was a loving husband, father, brother, son-in-law, uncle and grandfather (known as “Bamp”) and will be remembered as an “all-around great & funny guy” by those who knew him.
In addition to his wife Sandra with whom he shared 20 years of marriage, Michael is survived by his beloved children, Erik McMahon and his wife Kristin of Swampscott and Ellen Brown and her fiancé Cory Anderson of Peabody; his cherished grandchildren, Dakota, Kolten and Lily; his brother Benjamin McMahon Jr. of Orleans; his sisters, Kathleen Dodge and her husband Kenneth and Patricia Levasseur all of Beverly; his loving mother-in-law MaryJane Blais of Salem and his many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, friends and his loyal fur babies Olive and Maggie.
Service information: A funeral will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. from the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt. 129), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Pius V Church, Lynn at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. Donations in Michael’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
