SWAMPSCOTT — Irving Edward Kane, age 89, of Swampscott, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019. He was the loving husband of Mary Judith (Hameline) Kane, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late John and Kate (Hines) Kane. He had lived in Lynnfield for many years before moving to Swampscott in recent years. Irving was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Boston College and Boston College Law School.
He served in the United States Marine Corps. He worked as the assistant registrar of Probate for Essex County, and later served as councilor-at-large for the City of Lynn. He served two terms as the mayor of Lynn. He was also a commissioner of the Department of Public Utilities for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and ran a successful law practice in Lynn for many years until his retirement two years ago.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kate Kane (Gallagher); his son, Joshua H. Kane and his wife Jodi; his grandchildren, Kane Gallagher and his wife Kate, Corinne Fador and her husband Jon, Leah Huber and her husband Greg, John “Jack” Kane, Francis “F.X.” Kane and Olivia Kane; his great-grandchildren, Luke Fador, Kellan Fador and Rowan Gallagher; as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was the youngest of a very large family and was predeceased by his brothers and sisters.
Service information: A memorial visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m. in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn. His funeral Mass will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 174 Humphrey St., Swampscott. Relatives and friends are invited.
