Helen A. McSweeney, 94
LYNN — Mrs. Helen A. (Furtak) McSweeney, age 94 and lifelong resident of Lynn, died on Tuesday morning, May 14, 2019, at Sunrise of Lynnfield, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Deputy Chief of Lynn Police, Daniel G. McSweeney Sr., with whom she shared almost 40 years of marriage and predeceased her in March of 2000.
Born in Lynn on May 19, 1924, Helen was the daughter of the late Antony and Apollonia (Shuknarowska) Furtak. She grew up in the Brickyard on Neptune Street in Lynn and graduated from Lynn Classical in 1942. After working for a year for the General Electric Company she was admitted to the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation she was offered a job as assistant science instructor and was later promoted to head nurse at Lynn Hospital.
On June 29, 1957, Helen was admitted to the Lynn Police Department. Along with her partner, Clara Zamejtis, she was the first woman elected the Lynn Rotary Club’s Policeman of the Year in 1973. The award was given annually to a police officer for meritorious service to the city. She first met her husband Daniel, then a sergeant for the Lynn Police, in 1957 and married in 1961. For more than 31 years, Helen worked as a policewoman investigator for the Lynn Police Department and retired in 1988.
She was an active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott, member of their prayer group and volunteered on their planning committee for the many activities and programs at the church. Helen and Daniel were proud supporters of the Knights of Columbus Valladolid Council #70 in Lynn and the Boys and Girls Club of Lynn. She enjoyed traveling and took many trips, organized by Pat Dennis, to many places around the world. She was an avid reader, especially fond of the Wall Street Journal and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her loving children, Daniel G. McSweeney Jr. and his wife Janelle of Lynnfield and David A. McSweeney of South Boston; her beloved grandchildren, Daniel Patrick and Lilli Joan McSweeney; her sisters-in-law, Ann Breslow and Isabelle McSweeney, both of Lynn; and her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and close friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Geneva and Dr. Julius Sozanski.
Service information: A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 in St. John the Evangelist Church, 178 Humphrey St., Swampscott, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn.
