Gordon F. Smith, 78

Gordon Freeman “Smitty” Smith, age 78, of Middleton, died at his home on Friday January 4, 2019, with the support of family and All Care Hospice, from complications of a heart attack he suffered in October. He was the husband of Georgiann (Raimo) Smith with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.

Born in Swampscott and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late James F. and Mary (Brown) Smith. He attended Lynn Schools and was a graduate of Lynn Trade class of 1958. He has lived in Middleton for 26 years.

Smitty was a US Army Veteran, serving in Germany as a Corporal from 1961-1964 and was a member of the Staff Sergeant Arthur F. DeFranzo VFW Post 2346, Saugus.

He went to work as a serviceman for Lynn Gas in 1967 and over the course of the next 50 years would work for Lynn Gas, Boston Gas, Colonial Gas in Lowell, and finally National Grid until his retirement in 2017. He had previously worked for Public Work Supply and Cement Line Pipe in Lynn.

He enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods and Aruba, meeting with his fellow National Grid Retirees, crossword puzzles, and spending time with his granddaughter and her dog.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Scott and Tara, a granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Margaret Nicholl. Smitty’s family would like to offer their thanks and appreciation to the staff of All Care Hospice for the care and compassion shown to their family.

Service information: Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Solimine Funeral Home 426 Broadway (RTE129), Lynn. Burial and Military Honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
