Francis L. McCarthy Sr., 97
NAHANT — Mr. Francis L. McCarthy Sr., age 97, of Nahant, died Sept. 1, 2018. He was the husband of the late Martha (Gallagher) McCarthy, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his three brothers, William J., killed in action on Iwo Jima, Robert H. of California and George B. of West Peabody.
Born in Saugus, he was the son of the late Francis X. and Gertrude L. (Schaadt) McCarthy. He was a graduate of Saugus High School, Class of 1938 and Boston College, Class of 1950.
He served in World War II as a 1st Lieutenant Heavy Bomber Pilot in the European Theater having flown 35 missions. He was awarded the Air Medal of several Oak Leaf Clusters and was appointed as Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the president of the French Republic. He was also a licensed commercial pilot.
He was employed in manufacturing and marketing at General Electric and later by the MBTA as a rail inspector, where he retired.
Mr. McCarthy leaves behind two sons, William J. of Lynn, and Francis L. of Nahant and his wife, Susan. He also leaves behind one grandson, Kevin of Lynn.

Service information: Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. in the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Funeral service will be private with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn.
