Retired Lynn firefighterLYNN – Edward J. McDonald, age 84, of Lynn, died Thursday in Salem Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary (Nabeska) McDonald, with whom he shred of 64 years of marriage, and the son of the late John and Myra (Wall) McDonald.Born and raised in the Brickyard section of Lynn, he has lived in Lynn all his life. Educated at Lynn Classical High School, he was a United States Army veteran during World War II. He was a sergeant with the First Armor Division Field Artillery Battalion in Italy.Mr. McDonald worked for the City of Lynn where he worked as a firefighter until his retirement in 1974. He worked at both the former Federal Street station and at Fire Headquarters.He enjoyed trips to Mohegan Sun and woodworking and was a member of the Lynn Fire Department Relief Association.He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Barber and her husband William of Salem; his grandchildren, Jason Barber, Jana Caron, James and Kathryn Catalano and his great grandchildren, Bryan and Joseph Catalano, Jonathan Mosesso, Ava and Chase Caron. He also leaves a brother, William “Kenny” McDonald of Nahant; a sister, Claire Mitchell of Marblehead and several nieces and nephews. He is the father of the late Karen Hallinan and Edward J. McDonald Jr.; brother of the late Dorothy Estabrook, Gladys Clark, John and Herbie McDonald.Service information: His funeral will be held in the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129) Lynn on Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4-8 p.m.
