Dorothy N. Ezemba, 18

Dorothy Nkechinyere Ezemba, age 18, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, at the North Shore Medical Center Salem Hospital.

She was born May 8, 2000. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School in 2018 and accepted to the University of Massachusetts Lowell with plans to pursue a career as a physical therapist. Dorothy is a former Lynn English Bulldogs girls’ basketball player.

First diagnosed with a rare cancer of the muscle, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, in the Spring of her junior year of high school in 2017. Dorothy underwent treatment including surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

At the end of her junior year in 2017, Dorothy returned to school as she refused to let cancer win. Without missing a beat, Dorothy continued to study hard in school, participate in after-school curricular activities, and maintain a part-time job. Her illness forced her to miss her senior basketball season, however, she remained close with the team by attending games and practices.

Truly living life to the fullest, she enjoyed even the simplest things in life with family and friends. Honors and awards, both academically and athletically, were numerous. One of which included an honor by the Board 130 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) the James Young Courage Award.

Dorothy went into remission for a time, but the cancer shortly returned again in the Spring. Despite her adversities, Dorothy graduated high school on June 8, 2018. Always smiling and laughing through it all. Mid-November Dorothy entered Hospice. Just as every second in a basketball game counts every moment in life counts. The fourth quarter is the ultimate test of endurance, perseverance, determination, and willpower; her battle with cancer proved to be the very same. Dorothy Ezemba remained strong, and fought until the very end.
