Dorothea Kurkul, 94
BEVERLY — Mrs. Dorothea “Dot” (Hughes) Kurkul, 94, of Beverly, died on Aug. 27, 2019 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Dot was the daughter of the late John William and Ellen Mary (Kelley) Hughes, and was the sweetheart to her late husband, Edmund J. Kurkul, to whom she was married for 50 years. Raised in East Boston, she graduated from Boston Girl’s Latin High School and attended night classes at Harvard Business School before starting her career and moving to Lynn in 1954.
Dot retired in 1984 after working 20 years for the General Electric Company. She was a member of IUE Local 201 and Lynn AmVets Auxiliary. She carried the lessons from her work into daily life, diligently adding her receipts well into her golden years. Dot and Ed retired to Beverly in 1991 where they happily spent the rest of their years.
Dot had a zest for life. Whether it be bingo, dancing, or singing, you could always find her as the life of the party. Undeniably one of her favorite pastimes was going on cruises, having gone on more than 30 throughout her years. She particularly loved regaling people with stories of her trip on the Queen Mary II. Dot spent time as a volunteer at the Lynn Senior Center. Her other hobbies included crocheting afghans for her family and hats for babies at the local hospital. Most importantly, she loved her family, and her greatest joy was watching them grow to have families of their own and offering words of wisdom.
She is survived by her children, Dorothy Anne Gillan and her husband Patrick of Beverly, Edmund C. Kurkul and his wife Pamela of Gardner, John “Jack” Kurkul and his wife Elaine of Lynn, Mary Ellen Sharkey and her husband John of Beverly, and David Kurkul and his wife Tricia of Exeter, N.H. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren, John, David, Charles, Paula, Michelle, Alison Lee, Julie, Benjamin, Alexandra, Jacquelyn, Matthew, Berkeley; and two great-grandchildren, Riley and Avery. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. Sister of the late John, Joseph and Virginia Hughes, Eleanor McCormick, Carolyn McCormick and Mary Mullen. She also leaves behind two of her closest four-legged companions, Dougie and Fenway, with whom she spent a great deal of time and countless episodes of Jeopardy.
