Doris A. Cutler
Doris A. Cutler, nee Napierski, peacefully passed away on Nov. 21, 2018 in the loving arms of her family.
Born in Lynn to Stephen and Ann Napierski, she married Paul Cutler in 1963. They lived in Verona, Italy for a year, then moved to Arlington, Va., in 1965. Doris worked for the Army Audit Agency, then helped Paul build Pro-Typists, Inc., a court reporting firm in Washington, D.C., where she was vice president and secretary, and was a transcriber for Paul’s reporting.
Doris attended Brickett Elementary School, Pickering Junior High School, and Lynn English High School. An avid beach goer, daily attendance with friends at Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott in the summer was a requirement, 60-degree water or not, combined with a trip across the street for a Royal Crown Cola. Safety for the skin being paramount, of course, she made sure to completely cover herself with baby oil mixed with iodine.
Doris loved dancing at school and church, local parties, the Totem Pole Ballroom at Norumbega Park, a trip to the Peppermint Lounge to do the twist — anyplace there was music and a dance floor. She was active in sports, playing tennis and racketball. Later in life, when her osteoarthritis became severe, she turned to water aerobics and hit the gym three days a week to work on the machines. Going to the beaches on Cape Ann, Hilton Head, S.C., and the Caribbean, even with a cane, was a must.
Doris was an excellent cook and delighted in having dinners and picnics in the park with friends and family. Working from home, she was always able to “be there” for the neighborhood kids, packing them into the car for a pool trip or comforting their bruised knees and egos. And whether it be stopping to help someone in need, even when her own mobility issues had become severe, or finding a loving home for a stray animal, she had an endless amount of compassion for others.
Doris’ joyful spirit will forever remain with her husband of 55 years, Paul; her daughter, Claudia Osman and her husband, Erick; the pride-of-her-life, beloved grandchildren, Kai Ritter and Nylah Osman; her son, Matthew Cutler and his wife, Lori Sales Cutler; her sister, Carol Ellis and her husband, Don, and their family; her sister, Esther Mueller and her husband, Dave, and their family; her wonderful extended family and friends, including the water aerobics Divas; and the princess of the house, the cat, Vita.
Wherever her spirit travels, let’s hope there will be sunny beaches, warm water, tasty margaritas, and family and good friends who love to share great food.
