To the editor:
In 1983 my father, “Salvy” Migliaccio, purchased Steve’s Greenhouses on the corner of Jenness and Broadway. It became an important extension of his Salvy the Florist business and in many ways his pride and joy.
Following renovations to the property he decided that a fountain, which are abundant in his native Italy, would be a harmonious addition to the property. For years that fountain has been an oasis in Lynn as the city has grown into a thriving urban center.
Amidst the colorful displays of flowers and plants, that fountain and its water connects us to the natural beauty of the world which so often eludes us as we rush through our busy lives.
The plan by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to essentially demolish the fountain is dictatorial and a bureaucratic overreach. Its lack of community input is insulting to the residents of Ward 1.
Let these bureaucrats return to their drawing boards and instead come back to the community with a new plan that will beautify the neighborhood by creatively incorporating and preserving the fountain in its design.
After all, the streets don’t just belong to the buses and cars — they belong to the people.
Sincerely,
David Migliaccio
Lynn
