GIRLS BASKETBALL
Marblehead 41
Ipswich 36
The Ipswich girls basketball team got the better of Marblehead at the beginning of the season, and it appeared that was going to be the case again Tuesday afternoon. That said, the Magicians denied a case of déjà vu’ to come from behind and upend the Tigers 41-36.
The Magicians trailed 23-9 at the end of the first half, but outscored Ipswich 32-13 in the second half, which Marblehead coach Paul Moran was fired up about postgame.
“It was Ipswich’s Senior Day, and they came out on fire,” Moran said. “Ipswich moved the ball so well and we just did not match their intensity in the first 16 minutes. The girls really stepped up in the second half and did a heck of a job fighting back into the game and winning it. I am so proud of this group.”
Leading the second half-surge for the Magicians was the freshman trio of Tessa Andriano (team-high 16 points), Marietta O’Connell (six) and Samara Dosch (three).
“These three freshman girls were a huge reason why we came out on top today,” Moran said. “Tessa is playing amazing, Maurie made three clutch free throws to close out the game, and Sam made three important free throws also for us down the stretch.”
Junior Sam Dormer had another solid performance for Marblehead (nine points). The Magicians finished their regular season with a record of 10-7 and now await the postseason schedule.
Peabody 63
Georgetown 35
The Tanners closed out their regular season with a 63-35 win over Georgetown to up its record to an impressive 16-4. Peabody was led by Logan Lomasney who had 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Abby Bettencourt contributed with 15 points, four steals, and two blocks. Lauryn Mendonca recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Cathedral 62
KIPP 54
Despite the 62-54 loss to Cathedral on Wednesday, KIPP head coach Moody Bey was very impressed with what his team accomplished this year.
“We ended the season with a 11-9 record, which does not seem overly impressive, but we played a very difficult schedule,” Bey said. “Out of our 20 games, 17 of those were matched up against teams that will be in the state tournament in their respective divisions.”
“Our record against Division 5 teams was 3-0, so I think this group will be more than ready for the state tournament.”
KIPP jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the first quarter, but Cathedral forged ahead 15-12 at the end of the frame due to their hot shooting from three, which never slowed down.
The senior trio of Vic Mafo (11 points and 10 rebounds), Osaru Evbenaye (13 points) and Juan Setalsingh (11 points) had strong performances for KIPP.
Fenwick 73

Haverhill 2
PLNR 0
PLNR head coach Michelle Roach is happy with her team’s performance, despite the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Haverhill.
“We played a really good game tonight, even better than we did in some of the games we won, but the puck just didn’t bounce our way tonight,” Roach said. “We outshot Haverhill 39-17, but the Haverhill goalie was, and is, very good, so she deserves a ton of credit.”
Anchoring a stingy PLNR defense was the sophomore duo of Leah Buckley and Daniella White, and also playing strong upfront for PLNR were senior captain Hannah Gromko, senior captain Jeanna DiNapoli, freshman Angela Fabbo, and senior Ella Chase.
PLNR (16-4) will now shift its focus to the MIAA Division I state tournament, as they find out its seeding Friday.
