The St. Mary’s boys track and field team won the CCL championship on Tuesday after defeating Cardinal Spellman 52-39. Talk about impressive – the Spartans moved to 4-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall. First place finishers included Ernie Panias, who broke a school record in the 55m with a time of 6.76, Jesse Moriello (1:34 in 600m), Dylan Moroney (19’9” in long jump), Kyle Kwiatek (2:44 in 1,000m), and both relay teams.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
St. Mary’s 66, Spellman 24
Upping its record to 2-2 in the CCL and 2-3 overall, the Spartans ran to victory on Tuesday. Some impressive performances came from double-winner and senior captain Kaelyn Jennings (55m hurdles, 10.34; 55m, 8.22) and senior captain Anna Fringuelli (second in high jump 4’10” to qualify for states, and first in the 300m with 47.53). Lory Suriel caught eyes with a 34’4” in shot put, while eighth grader Kelsey Kwiatek ran the 600m in 1:53.03.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Tech 82, Fellowship 22
The Tigers moved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in conference with a blowout win over Fellowship. Better yet – it extended Tech’s winning streak to six games. Ethan Prum led the Tigers with 12 points, while eighth grader Keith Chandler added 10. Freshman Brandon Antwine also scored 10 in the victory. The Tigers return to action Thursday on the road against Pioneer Charter.
KIPP 61, Whittier 58
Osaru Evbenaye (11 points) played the role of the hero for KIPP on Tuesday, hitting the final shot to put the Panthers up three against Whittier. Trosky Pena led all scorers with 14 points, while Vic Mafo added 12. A 20-point third quarter was the difference, as well as KIPP having just six turnovers on the night.
English 83, Medford 33
Once again, the box score was filled up for the Lynn English boys basketball team. In Tuesday’s 50-point victory – and doing what they do best – Tyrese Melo García had 21 points and 10 assists, while Josh St. Jean had 21 points and 15 rebounds. Josh Anderson contributed with 10 and seven rebounds, while Carmelo Buese tacked on 10 as well. No. 12 (Division I) English moved to 13-0 on the season, and has played on the road in every game this month.
Beverly 67, Saugus 41
Against a very tough Beverly team, the Sachems never quit on Tuesday. Ben Tapia-Gately impressed with 14 points while Chris Flynn added another nine. For the Panthers, Rook Landman put on a show with 17 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Swampscott 46, Masco 43
Go, Big Blue, go. In a tight matchup at home, Swampscott escaped with a 46-43 victory against Masco on Tuesday. Head coach Jason Knowles called it a “defensive battle” as the Big Blue upped their record to 4-7. Connor Chiarello had 24 points, while Liam Wales followed with 11. Max Brodsky chipped in with four, while center Riad Benagour added seven. Swampscott returns home Friday against Gloucester.
Brockton 61, St. Mary’s 57
The Spartans rallied to tie the game late after trailing by nine, but Brockton scored four unanswered points to finish things off. Despite the loss, it didn’t come without positives. St. Mary’s Anthony D’Itria scored 14 points (four threes in the first half), while Nick Sacco scored 13 points.
Peabody 77, Danvers 43
Good news, Peabody fans, your boys basketball team officially qualified for the state tournament on Tuesday after defeating Danvers in enemy territory 77-43. The Tanners moved to 10-2 with the victory as A.J. Forte (18 points) and Nathan Braz (25) put up strong performances, while Danny Barrett (nine) and Raphel Laurent (eight) each chipped in.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Tech 65, Fellowship 40
The Tigers took care of business on Tuesday, blowing out Fellowship 65-40 to advance to 7-3 on the season. Aliyah Volquez had 22 points, six rebounds and six steals, while the ever-so-versatile Engelyz Bingham put up 17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Divine Egbuta recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Elibette Rodriguez played strong with seven points and five steals.
Classical 53, Revere 39
In a rare occurrence, the Rams were down two at halftime. That said, Classical conquered instead of cowered, outscoring Revere 34-18 in the second half. Seniors Ava Thurman, Lauren Henessey, and sophomore Keisha Perez all had 14 points for the still-undefeated Rams (13-0). Classical returns to action Thursday at home against Medford.
Lynnfield 41, Manchester-Essex 35
In a statistic you don’t see every day, the Lynnfield girls basketball team held Manchester-Essex scoreless at the end of the first quarter. And despite leading by just one point (27-26) at the end of the third, Lynnfield pulled away to win by six points. Sophomore guard Erika Pasquale led the way with 10 points, and junior forward Jaelynn Moon scored nine alongside 13 rebounds in what head coach Susan Breen called “a great team effort.”
Peabody 60, Danvers 32
The Tanners have climbed to a perfect 9-0 this season, nearly doubling up Danvers on Tuesday. Peabody was led by Taylor Bettencourt who scored 13 points to go with five assists, while Ally Bettencourt had 13 points, six rebounds, and six steals. Logan Lomasney added 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Abby Bettencourt tacked on nine points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Lauryn Mendonca impressed as well with six rebounds and five assists, while Sophia Coburn and Elizabeth Bettencourt also submitted strong performances.

Medford 115.35, Peabody 76.25
On an evening when Tanner after Tanner put up strong performances, there were many things to smile about. Top scores came from captain Filip Piechowiak (8 on vault), captain Camila Fialho (5.85 on floor), Allie Flewelling (5.45 on floor), Gianna DigianFelice (5.3 on floor), and Kim Viera (4.5 on vault).
