NAHANT — The Police Department announced Monday that it had been awarded $19,918 in grant funding to improve road safety.
The funds were provided by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) and allocated by the Office of Grants and Research (OGR). The funding will be used to support the Municipal Road Safety Program, which assists in developing enforcement strategies to reduce roadway crashes, injuries, fatalities, and associated economic losses in Massachusetts.
The total grant allocated in FY23 grant funding to municipal police departments statewide is $5 million. The funding is meant to address municipal traffic issues, provide essential equipment options, and develop traffic safety programs.
The Nahant Police Department will use the grant to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists in town. According to Police Chief Timothy Furlong, there is an increase in pedestrians and bicyclists during the warm weather season.
“Nahant sees a large increase in pedestrians and bicyclists during the summer, as visitors come to our beaches. As a small Department, this grant will allow to add extra patrols and increase our safety and enforcement efforts when they are needed most,” Furlong said in a statement. “We would like to thank the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security for their ongoing support.”
