NEWBURYPORT — A 21-year-old Lynn man was killed Wednesday night when he was thrown from his motorcycle on I-95 North and run over by three separate vehicles, State Police said.
State Police responded to the multi-vehicle crash at 10:16 p.m., spokesman David Procopio said in a statement. The incident began when two vehicles had a near-collision on the northbound side of the highway, causing one of them to swerve into Daniel E. Mena, overturning his 2005 Yamaha XVS110.
As a result, Mena was separated from his bike, leaving him lying in the roadway. A 2016 Subaru being driven by a 49-year-old Newburyport woman was then unable to “stop or take evasive measures in time” and struck Mena, the motorcycle, or both, State Police said. As a result, the woman lost control of the car, which spun into the grass shoulder of the road and struck a guardrail.
Then, two other vehicles, a 2019 Ford Escape SUV and a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, were also unable to avoid the crash scene and struck Mena, the motorcycle, or both. Mena was pronounced dead at the scene. The other drivers involved in the crash suffered non life-threatening injuries, Procopio said.
Subsequent investigation determined the license plate on Mena’s motorcycle belonged to a different motorcycle.
State Police have not yet identified the initial two vehicles that nearly avoided colliding, causing one of them to swerve into the Yamaha, the statement said. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
