SAUGUS — A 45-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Route 1 on foot, State Police said.
Carlos Vazquez, of Bennington, Vermont, was attempting to cross all three southbound lanes of Route 1 from the area of a Burger King restaurant around 10:04 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a 2014 Nissan Maxima being driven by a 60-year-old Wakefield man, David Procopio, a spokesman for State Police said in a statement. Vazquez sustained serious injuries and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation by State Police suggests that Vazquez was attempting to reach the northbound side of the highway, where his girlfriend was waiting for him, Procopio said.
The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and was cooperating with State Police. No charges have been filed against him to date, and the investigation to determine if charges are warranted is ongoing, State Police said.
The crash closed the two left lanes of the highway until nearly midnight, Procopio said. All lanes were re-opened by 12:57 a.m.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing, he said.
