LYNN — A 25-year-old Lynn man who is charged with firing multiple rounds outside of Thurgood Marshall Middle School, was ordered held without bail pending the outcome of a dangerousness hearing at his arraignment in Lynn District Court Monday morning.
Police arrested Canseco Morillo, 25, on Saturday after reviewing surveillance footage of a man, believed to be Morillo, firing multiple rounds into a crowd outside of the middle school.
Morillo will return to court on Aug. 15.
Morillo’s uncle, who asked that his name not be published, said that he does not want the public to jump to conclusions about his nephew’s alleged crimes.
“I just would like for everyone to get all the information before they pass judgment on my nephew because it’s easy to vilify a person when something like this happens, but you got to get all the facts, everything that happened, all the parties involved, and what went down to provoke him to do that if he actually did that,” Morillo’s uncle said. “Let the court system do its job, and let everybody get the facts before they start trying to place blame or vilify him as the sole bad guy. He wasn’t the only party involved.”
In a written statement, Lynn Police said that Morillo fired after an altercation with another man in the parking lot. Two bullets went through a woman’s windshield as she tried to drive away. The witness ducked, and the bullets missed her.
“The surveillance video shows that Morillo was involved in an altercation with another male. Morillo was observed running away, when he turned, pulled out a firearm, and recklessly fired several rounds into the crowded lot,” police said. “A vehicle operated by a female was attempting to exit the parking lot when two rounds were fired through the windshield of her vehicle.”
Police also said that “at least one other suspect” may have been in possession of a gun at the scene of the crime Friday night.
