MARBLEHEAD — As bidding on the Abbot Public Library renovation project draws nearer, the Public Library Building Renovation Committee met Tuesday to discuss design plans and potential savings.
The committee looked over the architectural plans set forth by Project Manager Michael Bellefeuille, an architect from Johnson Roberts Associates Inc. The group reviewed plans for the courtyard, which included a stone dust walkway, a patio area made of pavers, a generous lawn, and a reading nook. Looking at interior plans, the committee considered the location of a soundbooth, the aesthetics of the library’s fireplace, and potential elevator updates.
In reviewing the plans, the committee looked over areas of the design that could be eliminated or altered to get the project closer to its $9.5 million budget. Two main aspects the committee reviewed were furnishings and shelving — primarily aesthetic updates.
Nancy Arata, a committee member, said she recognized that saving money is important, but also wanted to find a way to “keep some sizzle in the steak.”
The committee briefly discussed looking toward private funding for some of the smaller projects within the renovation to make room in the budget for the base design. The current project includes four major alternates, or planned additions that are not part of the base design. These are the soundbooth, additional 3rd floor finishes, updating the roof’s membrane, and exterior masonry work.
The construction documents are nearing 75 percent completion, at which time they will be sent off for pricing estimates from bidders.
