LYNN — An 84-year-old man was pronounced dead Sunday at Salem Hospital after he fell into the water at King’s Beach off Lynn Shore Drive and was pulled out unconscious by several bystanders, said Lynn fire District Chief Joseph Zukas.
State and Lynn police responded to a report of a person in distress in the water at 3:13 p.m. Sunday, said David Procopio, a spokesman for State Police.
At the scene, a bystander who declined to identify herself said she saw the man in the water waving his arms in the air before a group of Good Samaritans rushed to his aid, and administered CPR.
“When we saw him, everyone ran and they got him out of the water. A lot of people tried to help him, we did chest compressions, and everything, and then the police came,” she said. “We just hope they can save him.”
Another witness said she saw the man convulsing while first responders put him on the stretcher.
The man was taken to Salem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Procopio.
The office of Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett will conduct a death investigation, Procopio said. Carrie Kimball, a spokeswoman for Blodgett’s office, referred a request for comment to Lynn police, who could not be reached Sunday.
