MARBLEHEAD — For many labs and research facilities, the breakneck pace of scientific advancement means waste is piling up — but it doesn’t have to. That is where The Lab Project comes in.
The Lab Project is a Marblehead-based nonprofit dedicated to making labs environmentally friendly and cost-efficient. Their mission is to “provide guidance to small labs” to reduce their carbon footprint and help make their funding stretch further.
The nonprofit has been making an impact since its launch in January, said Steven Miller, founder and executive director. He characterized The Lab Project’s services as helping the environment and working to “maximize operational efficiency.”
Miller said labs often produce “seven to ten times more waste” than other buildings of the same size. But he said people working in labs frequently display “passion” for environmentalism and a recognition that climate change is a pressing issue.
That makes it easy, he said, to get lab workers to agree that sustainable practices are worth investing in.
Because The Lab Project provides consulting pro bono, Miller and his team are able to help the most under-resourced labs, with a focus on minority- and women-owned facilities.
They seek to create a world where even the smallest companies are able to practice climate-conscious, sustainable science.
