LYNN — Police are investigating last Sunday’s hit-and-run crash involving a child, who sustained minor injuries, according to a Fire Department spokesman.
School Committee member Brian Castellanos and his fiance, Danielle Sonia, were going to pick up takeout at approximately 7 p.m., when they saw a child on a bike get hit by a car near 156 Walnut St.
Castellanos was driving into Lynn and stopped at a crosswalk to let a boy of about 12-13 years old cross with his bike. The boy was going to a convenience store for snacks, Castellanos said.
The boy was almost at the other side of the street when a dark gray or black Honda struck him. The car was going at about 35-45 miles per hour, Castellanos said.
“The kid landed on the hood, hit the windshield and bounced off,” said District Fire Chief Joseph Zukas.
Castellanos pulled over immediately. He saw that the boy was bleeding and could not stand up.
“He was just screaming and it was so traumatizing,” Castellanos said. “It was so scary.”
He called 911 while Sonia, who is a nurse, stabilized the child, telling him not to move in case he had serious injuries. She called the mother of the boy.
Lynn police and firefighters got to the scene of the crash pretty fast, Castellanos said.
There were other people who witnessed the crash. Many neighbors came outside and somebody had a video of the accident recorded on a Ring camera, said Zukas.
The boy was transported by the Atlantic Ambulance to MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Salem. His injuries turned out to be minor, Zukas said.
“What was very concerning was that the person who hit this young boy did not care to stop,” Castellanos said. “Me and my fiance could not believe our eyes, what we saw. We were both crying.”
The Lynn Police Department is conducting an investigation to find the car and the driver involved in the crash.
