NAHANT — Firefighters battled a house fire on Wharf Street Thursday night.
Police were the first to respond to the fire, which was reported shortly after 8 p.m. at 79 Wharf Street.
Upon arrival, officers noticed flames coming from the roof in the back of the two-and-a-half story home, Fire Chief Austin Antrim and Police Chief Timothy Furlong said in a joint statement.
Responding officers entered the single-family home, and found there were no people inside. Police removed all of the pets from the building before the Fire Department arrived, Antrim and Furlong said.
The working fire prompted a response from the entire Nahant Fire Department, and mutual aid from the Lynn and Swampscott Fire departments. Responding firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly, and prevent it from spreading, Antrim and Furlong said.
The fire damage was contained to the back of the home. The house also sustained smoke and water damage, Antrim and Furlong said.
“The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nahant Fire Department and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office,” Antrim and Furlong said.
Atlantic Ambulance also assisted at the scene on Thursday night, and the Marblehead Fire Department provided station coverage.
