SAUGUS — Saugus Veterans Council is organizing the first parade in the town since the beginning of the pandemic.
The council will conduct a Memorial Day parade and ceremony in honor of those the town remembers on Saturday, May 28.
“This parade will be a once-in-a-lifetime event for all who attend,” said Commander of the Saugus Veterans Council Stephen L. Castinetti.
He said the event will not only be bigger than ever before, but it will also bring a piece of history to Saugus.
“On Jan. 21, Commander Billie June Farrell was sworn in as the first female Commanding Officer of USS Constitution in its 224 years of existence,” said Castinetti, adding that Farrell has agreed to be the Grand Marshall of the parade and its keynote speaker at a ceremony to be held at Riverside Cemetery.
The parade this year will be represented not just by Saugus residents, but also by participants from Lynn, Salem, Beverly, Peabody, Revere, Boston, Wilmington, Worcester, Providence, R.I., and more. All will contribute to the event “in memory of those who gave all in defense of our nation,” said Castinetti.
According to Castinetti, the parade will start at Anna Parker Playground at 10 a.m., proceed through Cliftondale and end at Riverside Cemetery for a ceremony at the Civil War veterans lot.
“Let’s make this a Memorial Day to remember for Saugus,” said Castinetti.
