SALEM — Salem Academy Charter School has appointed Upper School Principal Andrea “Drea” Jacobs to be the new senior director of academics.
This new position, which Jacobs will officially begin on July 1 will replace the former head of school role that was previously held by current Executive Director Stephanie Callahan.
“Drea’s experience, commitment to our students, and strong instructional leadership made her the unanimous choice for this position,” said Callahan. “She has led strongly and with care throughout the pandemic. I am excited for her leadership at the next level.”
The title change reflects a realignment with current and anticipated organizational needs of the school in the process of redefining it.
“We are excited to see Drea Jacobs assume the role of senior director of academics,” Board Chair Mekka Smith said. “We are fortunate that Drea has continued to serve the Salem Academy community in a new role that will utilize her expertise in charter public school administration.”
Jacobs will continue as Upper School principal throughout the remainder of the school year, but will begin taking on additional responsibilities in preparation for the next school year, including hiring a principal to fill her spot.
”I am grateful to be a part of such a reflective and action-oriented community of students, families, and staff here at Salem Academy,” said Jacobs. “As we look to next year, I am eager to build upon our school’s strong foundation and will work to strengthen our student experience, focusing on rigorous, engaging classes, service to the community, student leadership, and better preparing students for post-graduate college and career opportunities.”
Jacobs graduated from Colby College in Maine with a degree in mathematical sciences. She has a master’s degree in educational leadership from National Louis University in Chicago.
Before working at Salem Academy, Jacobs was a managing director of schools for the UP Education Network, where she managed two UP turnaround middle schools within the Lawrence Public School system. She was also a founder and principal of KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate.
