To the editor:
Mid-morning last Saturday, I was about to go out to do my errands when I heard Jim scream, “There’s a fire across the street.”
I called 911 and our neighbors to alert them that the fire had started in the big white house under the fire escape. Thank God the residents got out with no lives lost.
I am told a firefighter had to go to the hospital and they lost everything.
The home totally collapsed and neighbors Angel and Bryan, with other people helping out, were carrying buckets of water to keep a brush fire from starting in the woods behind the houses.
The fire escalated into an inferno. Broadway was blocked off from Bay State Road to Euclid Avenue. There must have been fire engines from everywhere after they had trouble with getting water sufficient to the task at hand.
We were lucky the fire didn’t spread. Our firefighters and police officers were on scene through Sunday afternoon. They must have been exhausted.
