SALEM — More than 300 students attended Salem State University’s Career Closet last week, which provides free professional attire donated by members of the campus and surrounding communities.
This event, hosted by Salem State University’s (SSU) Career Services department, was held on March 29, 30 and 31.
“Between paying for tuition, books and other expenses, students face barriers when it comes to dressing for success at their internships and as they prepare to launch their careers,” said Career Services Coordinator Stefanie Nunley. “The high turnout at these events demonstrates how much need and interest there is in this program.”
The Career Closet offered more than 1,800 new or gently-used professional attire, including gender-inclusive items collected by the Salem State Center for Justice and Liberation.
“We hope to not only continue, but expand our ability to help students secure the attire they need as they begin their professions,” Nunley said.
The Salem State Alumni Association also sponsored free professional headshots for students on the first day of the Career Closet.
In addition to the Career Closet, in February SSU held its annual JCPenney Suit Up event virtually this year, which provides discounts on shopping.
SSU’s Career Services’ programming around professional attire was planned ahead of the university’s annual Spring Job and Internship Fair, which will be held on April 14.
