SAUGUS — A gas leak caused by a construction crew prompted police to close down Spring Street on Friday morning, police said.
The leak was caused by construction workers, who struck a high-pressure gas line at 26 Spring St. shortly before 8:30 a.m., police said.
The Saugus Police Department shut down the road at the request of the Fire Department, while National Grid worked to fix the leak. By noon, the road remained closed, police said.
“There was no evacuation of the surrounding area as the leak was contained,” a spokesperson for the Police Department said.
By 3 p.m., the scene was deemed safe, the Fire Department said.
