SALEM — Though North Shore Cancer WALK will be moving out of its home city, it will see a second life in Boston.
The event will join forces with Mass General Cancer Center’s Everyday Amazing Race in the fall, in order to expand the scope of its fundraising programs.
“In light of our partnership with the Mass General Cancer Center and our shared commitment to this community, it makes sense to combine our fundraising efforts for greater impact,” said Sara Andrews, senior vice president for development at Salem Hospital.
Salem held the North Shore Cancer WALK for more than 30 years, with much of its proceeds benefiting cancer programs and services at Salem Hospital and other facilities. Since the 1990s, the event has raised more than $24 million for new facilities, equipment, pioneering clinical trials, and wellness services for patients.
In addition to Salem Hospital, the WALK’s funds also supported the former North Shore Cancer Center (NSCC) and, since recently, Mass General North Shore’s Cancer Center in Danvers.
The opening of the Danvers facility and its consolidation with NSCC in 2009 marked a major milestone in the partnership between Mass General and Salem Hospital that continues to this day.
“While we are sad to see the North Shore Cancer WALK move out of Salem, we are excited about this opportunity to reach even more supporters of exceptional care,” said Andrews.
“We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the City of Salem and to each and every walker, sponsor, donor, and supporter who helped to make the North Shore Cancer WALK a success for 31 years,” said Andrews. “Together, we raised more than $24 million and created a remarkable legacy that, through this partnership, will continue for years to come.”
The race includes a five-mile run and a five-mile walk. The funds raised during the event by walkers and sponsors will be used for the benefit of the Mass General North Shore Cancer Center, as well as regional programs focused on cancer care and research.
The Everyday Amazing Race starts on the Esplanade in Boston’s Back Bay on Sunday, Sept. 18. Registration for the 2022 event will open in April. For more information, please visit: https://because.massgeneral.org/event/mass-general-cancer-center-eversource-everyday-amazing-race-2021/e320842.
