It was quite a weekend for Peabody/Lynnfield girls hockey player Sarah Powers and her team.
The Tanners swept a tough weekend, blanking Newburyport 5-0 Saturday night and coming back on short rest Sunday morning to edge Marblehead/Swampscott, 4-2, at Salem State’s Rockett Arena.
Powers, a freshman, had five goals over the two days ― a hat trick in Sunday’s win and two in Saturday’s victory.
“We had a late night Saturday, and I think we started a little slow,” said Peabody coach Michelle Roach. “Sarah played very well and did a good job moving the puck for us.”
Conversely, the Magicians dropped a pair this weekend, also losing Saturday, 3-1, to Leominister.
“(Sunday) was a tough game for us,” said Marblehead coach Brittany Smith. “We have to find a way to get more shots on net. We just seem to be missing with our passes.”
The Tanners drew first blood Sunday, scoring with 6:35 to go in the opening period when Powers scored the first of her three. She gathered the puck just outside the blue line, skated into the zone, and launched one from about 10 feet out that beat goalie Lily Francoeur on her stick side.
It didn’t take Marblehead long to answer. Less than a minute later, Elsa Wood scored out of a scramble in front of the net, with the helper coming from Ashley Piersol.
The Tanners regained the lead with 1:53 left in the first period when Hannah Gromko scored with an assist from Ava Buckley.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Peabody struck once more. It was Powers again, picking up a rebound from a shot by Buckley and just tucking it behind Francoeur to make the score 3-1. Penelope Spack also recorded an assist.
However, Marblehead wouldn’t go away. Wood got her second of the game, this one also on an assist by Piersol, who set up Wood with a perfect shot from about 15 feet dead center of the net.
The Powers-Buckley combo struck again with 8:10 to go. Powers completed the hat trick by ricocheting her odd-angle shot off Francoeur’s pads and into the net.
“Ava had a real good game,” Roach said. “There’s a lot of action that doesn’t make it onto the score sheet, and she’s one of those types of players.”
Marblehead (6-10) and Peabody (12-3-1) have a rematch Wednesday at McCann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody.
Saturday, Powers and junior forward Jenna DiNapoli each scored two goals, sophomore forward Catie Kampersal added another. Four of the Tanners’ goals came short-handed, including one when they were two players down.
Alyse Mutti had the shutout for Peabody.
Piersol scored Marblehead’s lone goal Saturday in the loss to Leominister.
