The Peabody/Lynnfield girls hockey team returned to the ice in a big way Monday afternoon, coming back after five days off to bring home an 8-1 win over Medford/Malden at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink.
Senior captain Catherine Sweeney led the offensive attack for the Tanners with one goal and two assists, while freshman Shirley Whitmore scored two goals. Senior Lauryn Mitchell and freshman Alexa Pepper each scored their first career varsity goals. In total, 11 different Peabody/Lynnfield players registered a point in the win.
Peabody/Lynnfield (5-2-1) hosts Newburyport Wednesday (5:15).
GIRLS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 1, Andover 1
Despite trailing for nearly the entire game, the Spartans got a late goal from Kelly Lovett to secure the draw and skate away with a point.
St. Mary’s (4-2-2) hosts Notre Dame Academy Wednesday (6).
BOYS HOCKEY
Lynnfield 5, Westwood 2
The Pioneers went on the road to Canton Ice House and came home with a big non-conference victory.
Chase Carney continued his stellar start to the season, scoring three goals and adding two assists for a five-point day. Drew Damiani continued to lead the way from the blue line with one goal and two assists, while Aidan Burke also contributed one goal and two assists. Tyler Scoppetuolo notched one assist, while goalie Phineas Mitchener earned the victory in net.
Lynnfield (8-2-0) hosts Groton-Dunstable Saturday (4).
Winthrop 5, Medford 0
With five different goal scorers on the day, the Vikings picked up their second win in as many days.
Ari Hain, Michael Holgersen, Phil Boncore, Robert Rich and Charlie Dassau each scored one goal in the win, while JD Parker notched two assists and Jack Hayes had one assist.
Winthrop (4-3-0) hosts Bishop Fenwick Wednesday (6:10).
Hingham 3, St. Mary’s 2
The Spartans battled back to tie the score at 2-2, but a goal late in the third period from Hingham led to a loss on the road.
Joey Calder and Brady Bullock each scored one goal in the loss.
St. Mary’s (4-5-2) hosts Newburyport Saturday night (7:20).
Lexington 7, Saugus 4
Massey Ventre scored two goals in the loss for the Sachems, while Jason Caron scored one goal.
Saugus (3-6-0) hosts Everett Wednesday (5:40).
Hamilton-Wenham 4, Swampscott 0
Swampscott (2-7-1) travels to Rockport Wednesday (7).
BOYS BASKETBALL
KIPP 61, Lynn Tech 51
Behind a stellar performance from Piero Canales, who had a massive double-double with 38 points and 11 rebounds, the Panthers picked up the win against their cross-town rival.
Juan Setalsingh also had a solid game with three points, 12 assists and seven steals.
KIPP (2-2) hosts Greater Lowell Monday.
Michael Welch led the way for Tech with 24 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Ederick Gonzalez contributed nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Tech (1-6) now has more than a week off before facing Swampscott on Jan. 26 (7).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Peabody 74, Revere 29
The Tanners had three players finish in double figures on the day, with Abby Bettencourt leading the offensive attack with 14 points. Taylor Bettencourt added 13 points, while Janelle Baetzel contributed 12 points. Gina Martinello, Maya Houvardas and Ally Bettencourt also played well in the victory.
Peabody (8-1) plays on the road at Winthrop Friday (6).
Revere (4-4) has a quick turnaround with a road game against Everett Tuesday (7).
