LYNN — The city is hosting a virtual, public meeting regarding its hazard mitigation plan on Wednesday, Jan. 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The city is updating its hazard mitigation plan to help reduce its vulnerability to natural hazards including flooding, hurricanes and winter storms.
While natural hazards can have a serious impact on residents and businesses, the city is inviting the public to be involved in the process of creating a plan to meet concerns head on.
During Wednesday’s public meeting, there will be a presentation of the final draft of the hazard mitigation plan, which will be available for public comment from Jan. 3 through Jan. 10 on the planning department’s website.
The city has a history of certain areas flooding with heavy rainfall.
During the recent Tropical Storm Elsa in July, about three inches of rain fell in Lynn in a matter of a few hours.
This storm flooded multiple areas, including typically-flooded spots on Boston Street, Bennett Street, the area around Market Basket, Commercial Street, Elmwood Avenue, Camden Street, South Elm Street and Astor Street.
These areas are low-lying spots that tend to flood with heavy rain, triggering the use of pumps at the Lynn Regional Wastewater Plant.
The city has been working on a combined sewer overflow project, which is expected to decrease flooding in these low-lying areas.
Phase Two will include the installation of a new pump station by Lynn Vocational Technical Institute.
The issue of flooding in the city is one of the aspects that will be addressed in the final hazard mitigation plan.
