SAUGUS —The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is inviting members of the public to participate in the Breakheart Reservation First Day Hike on Jan. 1.
This hike is co-sponsored by the Friends of Breakheart Reservation, a volunteer group in Saugus that is dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the area.
The invitation for the hike said this is a great way to, “make a resolution to burn off those extra holiday calories,” and start the new year in a healthy way. Hikers, whether novice or veteran, are encouraged to attend.
There will be two guided hikes throughout the paved loops of Breakheart — one hike will follow the Fox Run Trail, and one will travel around the upper and lower ponds.
The First Day Hike began in 1992 as a Massachusetts tradition, as a way to celebrate the new year by getting outside for some healthy exercise. In 2012, it became a nationwide event, promoted by America’s State Parks. Many people participate in First Day Hikes to counteract the indulgence of the holiday season, while others want to welcome the new year with fresh air.
In 2022, First Day Hikes will celebrate 30 years since it was established. There are seven different guided hikes across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The DCR also encourages anyone to create their own adventure in a state park near them or in their own backyard.
“In 2022, we hope that you make state parks an important part of your exercise routine and your life,” the DCR’s website states. “Happy New Year!”
The event starts at Breakheart Reservation Visitor Center on 177 Forest St. at 10 a.m. Cold weather is expected, so hikers are encouraged to wear layers of clothing and winter boots.
