SWAMPSCOTT — State Sen. Brendan Crighton (D-Lynn) announced on Wednesday the winner of the holiday-card competition among the town’s third-graders.
“This process allows me to connect with the students throughout my district in such a positive way and showcases their artistic abilities,” said Crighton. “Every year it is so difficult to choose from all of the amazing artwork.”
Crighton started this holiday tradition of asking students from local communities he represents to submit artwork for consideration in 2018.
This year’s card will use a design submitted by Lilianna Deveau from the Stanley Elementary School. Crighton said he chose Lilianna’s artwork for its colors and imagination, which capture the beauty of coming together to enjoy each other’s company and the warmth of the holiday season. Crighton is planning to visit Lilianna at her school when classes resume after New Year’s to personally thank her and throw a pizza party for the whole class.
“A highlight of my week was visiting Miss Kelly’s third-grade class to tell Lilianna and her peers that Senator Crighton would be visiting after vacation,” said Principal Kathleen Huntley.
She said other students cheered and high-fived Lilianna.
“They are so excited to ask the senator about his work,” said Huntley. “They are especially curious about his role in making laws.”
One student is planning to ask about the laws restricting what kind of pets a person can have in their home, said Huntley.
“That should be an interesting exchange,” she said.
Past holiday cards from Crighton have featured artwork from students at Johnson Elementary School in Nahant, Ingalls and Lincoln-Thomson Elementary schools in Lynn, and Village School in Marblehead.
