LYNN —“You guys are going to be great,” Outgoing City Council President Darren Cyr said to the City Council Tuesday night as he was honored for his time as a council member and president.
Cyr will be leaving the City Council in 2022, as he did not run for reelection in Ward 3 in order to pursue a campaign for mayor in 2021. Ultimately, he lost to School Committee member Jared Nicholson. Coco Alinsug is to succeed Cyr as Ward 3 councilor.
Cyr has served on the City Council for 16 years and was council president for the past four years. Cyr is proud of his tenure on the City Council and thanked his fellow members for the accomplishments they have brought to the city.
“I am going to miss all of you,” Cyr said. “Every single department person and every single city worker puts 100 percent into it all the time no matter what anyone thinks or feels.”
Fellow Councilor Richard Starbard awarded Cyr with a shadow box containing a gavel and a photo of the entire City Council. Starbard praised Cyr for his leadership as City Council president, saying that he was able to bring people together even in times of crisis.
“In some of our darkest times that we have seen over the last two years, I don’t think I have seen anyone rise to the occasion as Council President Cyr has,” said Starbard. “Whether the food drive he helped initiate, or raising $200,000, nobody showed the leadership that this man showed in our darkest times.”
Cyr thanked Starbard for the award and gave remarks of praise to the council and to his successor, Alinsug.
“Coco is here,” said Cyr. “I got a Christmas card from Coco — I know you’re going to work hard with the new mayor.”
