PEABODY — The Lynnfield boys hockey team may have lost a two-goal lead late in the third period, but the Pioneers avoided disaster when senior captain Chase Carney notched the game-winning goal in the final minutes of overtime to pull out a 4-3 victory over Triton in a Cape Ann League battle at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink Saturday afternoon.
In addition to Carney, the Pioneers scored one goal each from senior Aidan Burke, junior Drew Damiani and senior Tyler Scoppetuolo in the win. Senior goalie Phinneas Mitchener earned the win in net.
After a scoreless first period, Triton drew first blood in this one when it capitalized early in the second period on a goal from Mason Colby.
But Lynnfield took over the period from there, starting a few minutes later when Burke found the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
The Pioneers then earned a powerplay opportunity and took advantage, as Scoppetuolo lit the lamp to give the Pioneers the lead back. After Damiani netted a goal in the final minutes of the period, Lynnfield took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
But that momentum didn’t carry over, as Colby and Andrew Johnson each scored a goal down the stretch to send the game to overtime.
Luckily for the Pioneers, Carney was able to come through in the final minutes of the extra period to find the back of the net and give Lynnfield the overtime victory.
Lynnfield (3-0-0) returns to the ice Wednesday evening (6:10) on the road against Winthrop at Larsen Rink.
