MARBLEHEAD — A gas leak caused by maintenance at the Brown School prompted an evacuation of students and staff on Monday afternoon.
The Marblehead Fire and Police departments responded to a fire alarm on 40 Baldwin St. at 12:05 p.m. The fire personnel at the scene quickly identified what looked to be a release of Freon gas into the school that appeared to be the result of system maintenance that was performed just before the call.
The state Hazard Material team was called in to assist and conduct testing and monitoring within the school. The findings found no residual refrigerant in the air and the system lubrication oil was contained to the library.
District Administration and school staff evacuated everyone from the school without incident. Students were taken by bus to an alternate location and parents were notified.
There are no reported injuries at this time and the investigation of this incident is ongoing.
