SALEM — Authorities are investigating a shooting on Technology Way that left a suspect dead and the victim injured on Monday evening, the Essex County District Attorney’s office said.

Salem Police responded to 911 calls about multiple shots fired at 3 Technology Way at 5:07 p.m. on Monday, said District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett at a brief press conference, which took place near the scene shortly before 8 p.m.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a 55-year-old man on the ground, who had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. They also found a 33-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the head. It was unknown if she suffered from any other injuries, Blodgett said.

The woman received first aid immediately and was airlifted on a medical flight to a Boston hospital. She was still alive at about 8 p.m., Blodgett said. Police said the woman was in critical condition.

The man and the woman knew each other, said Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller, although the nature of their relationship was not known at the moment. They were not from Essex County. Miller said that there were some indications that the two were from New Hampshire.

The firearm was found at the scene, Blodgett said.

The victim was visiting the office of the manufacturing company she is working for, but the man had not entered the building, Miller said. At this time, police have identified both the man and the woman; however, they couldn’t release their names before notifying their families.

Police were interviewing multiple witnesses of the incident, Blodgett said. The incident is being investigated by the DA’s office, Salem Police, and the Essex State Police Detective Unit, the DA’s office said.
