SWAMPSCOTT — After an unsuccessful carjacking in Lynn, a man stole another car, crashed into a vehicle in Swampscott and was taken to a hospital by helicopter on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Swampscott Police Department, the man tried to carjack a motor vehicle in Lynn but the owner of the vehicle, who was licensed to carry a gun, shot him. He then got into another vehicle and drove to Swampscott, where he crashed into a moving car at the intersection of Ellis and Paradise roads near Abbott Park. A female driver and her young son appeared to have no physical injuries, police said.
Police found out at the crash scene that the man was wounded by a gunshot. He was airlifted in a helicopter to Boston Medical Center.
The Lynn Police Department said it could not reveal the name of the man, as he had not been charged by Sunday evening and the investigation is ongoing.
Larry Flynn, who lives on Paradise Road at the intersection, said both Lynn and Swampscott police came to the scene from different directions in what looked like a car chase.
“Police had their guns drawn at the man and told him to get on the ground,” Flynn said. “They approached him slower until he complied.”
Flynn said that the man was driving an older BMW sedan and his airbag deployed after the crash. The other car involved in the crash didn’t look badly damaged.
According to another neighbor, Joseph Duda, the man who caused the crash was not wearing pants.
