To the editor:
Attending the recent debate was a good experience to listen to the views of each candidate. Each candidate certainly wants what’s best for the citizens of Lynn.
The opinion written by Thor Jourgensen in Friday’s edition (Item, “Leadership styles on display in debate,” Sept. 10) was notably his own. Readers may or may not be swayed to change the minds of voters who were on the fence on which candidate they will support.
At the end of the column, Jourgensen states both men offered great ideas ― notice “both men,: not all.
The article continues, “Are they capable of saying ‘no’ to people? An answer to that question did not surface Wednesday night. But Darren Cyr — the candidate who touts (notice: touts) his ability to talk to anyone and everyone — made it clear he will say ‘no’ to anyone who doesn’t share his case-hardened (notice: case-hardened) viewpoint about Lynn’s future.”
Mr. Jourgensen did leave out one important comment in his narrative on Councilor Cyr. Yes, he did say, “listen to anyone and everyone.” However, from my vantage point, second row directly opposite of Cyr, he also said after listening, he would be open to be persuaded to change his mind.
Now in defense of Mr. Jourgensen, Councilor Cyr’s voice is mostly low key. From where he was seated there was a good chance he did not hear that comment. If he wishes, Mr. Jourgensen can go back and view the tapes.
The view of the Item’s staff is a powerful voice in our community; hopefully, they are not biased to any candidate running for office in our city.
Now, that’s my opinion.
