To the editor:
There has been much discussion among Lynn mayoral candidates regarding the development issue and they all want the same thing.
Some have mentioned corporations, saying they feel they are just looking for a fast, sustainable buck on the backs of the citizens.
Let’s take one step back. Look at Somerville, just as an example: It’s tough to rent there, let alone buy. And look at what’s happened to Salem during the last few years.
When cities try to develop rundown neighborhoods and old factories, that creates more housing. Unfortunately, it puts them out of renting, or buying.
Neighboring cities see this development, and in many cases, proceed to do the same.
What happens in most cases is that people migrate to cities where the rents and home prices are less expensive. This creates the ripple effect.
Now, why do we need development?
To create more taxes and disposable income which supports local businesses.
Let’s look at Lynn’s schools. More than 50 percent of our taxes support schools, not to mention the police, fire, and public works departments, all of which require health insurance, pensions, wages, raises, vacations, and overtime.
So let’s recap:
Whether we like it or not, the next mayor will have no choice but to try and get as much new development as possible. That is what the current mayor, and yes, with the approval of the City Council, has done.
In closing, we need it. Ask any homeowner what they pay in taxes, not to mention the trash fee.
We can’t put the entire burden on businesses and homeowners.
Corporations, in my opinion, are what makes things happen, like them or not.
Oh, did I forget to mention, we will be building new schools!!
