To the editor:
I am writing in response to the letter from Rick Eramian (“Answers needed in Saugus,” Item, Aug. 26) to take the opportunity to comment on the misunderstanding of the controversial effort commonly abbreviated as “defund the police,” and also commonly misinterpreted as an effort to reduce funding for law enforcement.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the intent of reform is to redirect, not reduce, funding — with an emphasis on education and training to use non-violent intervention as the first choice appropriate — specifically, and especially, in incidents such as the recent tragedy in Saugus.
