SAUGUS — “Thank you, God,” Marcia Procopio found herself saying Tuesday afternoon after surviving a dangerous collision.
Procopio, of Lynn, was driving on Walnut Street when all of a sudden, a boat flew off a truck and collided with her car, coming to a stop on top of her vehicle. She said she was on her way to play golf at Cedar Glenn when the crash occurred.
“I saw the boat coming towards me from the other side of the highway,” said Procopio. “I guess it snapped off the back of his truck and it flew across the street and I saw it coming and I said ‘oh my God’ and there was nothing I could do.”
Saugus Fire Lt. Andrew McDermott said that the fire department responded after receiving a report late that afternoon of a boat that came off a trailer and crashed into a car.
“Upon arrival, everyone was luckily safely out of the vehicle,” said McDermott. “The (tow) companies just worked on securing it, just so that it didn’t become more dangerous (than) the way it is now.”
McDermott said firefighters were working on lifting the boat and putting it onto a new trailer with the aim of clearing the busy road.
No one was injured, McDermott said; after the crash, Procopio said she was feeling OK.
“I’m fine,” she said. “(There were a) couple pieces of glass in my arm. I took them out and that was it.”
While Procopio was uninjured, her car was not so lucky. It was totaled in the crash.
Like many who witnessed the crash, McDermott said that this was something he hadn’t seen before.
“No, I’ve not seen a boat on top of a car before. That would be a first for me,” he said.
