KINGSTON — He may not have taken home medalist honors this year, but Swampscott’s Aidan Emmerich (Kernwood Country Club) is sitting in a good spot as the stroke play portion of the 103rd Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship comes to an end.
After shooting a second-round score of 1-over 73 at Indian Pond Country Club, Emmerich — who was the medalist at this event last year — currently sits in third place with a two-day total score of 3-under 141.
It was a solid start to the day for Emmerich, who was the solo leader entering the second round after shooting a 4-under 68 on Monday. A birdie and four pars through the first five holes had him in good shape, but a bogey on the par-4 sixth hole led him to make the turn in 36 strokes. He got the shot back with a birdie on the 10th, but bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes turned his under par round into an over par one.
Emmerich will now move on to the match play portion of the tournament, where he will face off against Pleasant Valley Country Club’s Jack Moy in the Round of 16 Wednesday at 9 a.m.
The only other local golfer to make the cut on Tuesday was Sean Dully, also a member at Kernwood Country Club. Dully put together a two-day total score of even-par 144 and finished the stroke play portion in fifth place.
A bogey, a birdie and four pars had Dully at even through six holes, but then a double bogey on the seventh and a bogey on the ninth saw him make the turn in 39 strokes. A bogey on the 10th hole threatened his chances of making the cut, but birdies on the 13th and 15th holes righted the ship and allowed him to finish the day with a 74.
Dully will take on David Cammarata-Green of Pine Brook Country Club in the Round of 16 Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
Some local golfers who competed but didn’t make the cut at the 103rd Massachusetts Junior Amateur included St. John’s Prep teammates Aidan LeBlanc and Alex Landry, as well as Salem High graduate Ethan Doyle, Ferncroft Country Club’s Hadyn Kornusky and Ian Rourke.
