GLOUCESTER — Maybe it was the rain, but Thursday just wasn’t the night for the Peabody West Little League team.
After struggling to generate any offense throughout the night, Peabody West fell to Pittsfield American by a score of 4-0 in the first game of a four-team, round robin-style state final tournament at Boudreau Field.
The offensive highlight of the night came from Gabe Casiano, who notched a leadoff double in the third inning before getting stranded at third base.
Cullen Pasterick got the start and took the loss on the mound for Peabody, tossing three innings. Brendan Kobierski went the rest of the way in relief for Peabody West.
After Peabody West went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning, Pittsfield American came right out and got on the scoreboard. After two quick outs, Sebastian Herrera stepped in and laced a double to the right field wall to keep the inning alive. Next up was Kevin Konefal, who knocked an RBI single up the middle to make it a 1-0 game.
After Casiano doubled and was stranded at third base in the top of the third, the skies opened up and a 70-minute rain delay ensued.
When the tarp finally came off the field just before 9 p.m., Pittsfield American got back to work. It took advantage of a pair of Peabody West errors and cashed in with two runs to make it 3-0, then Pittsfield American added another run in the bottom of the fifth for some insurance.
Peabody West is right back in action Friday night (7:30) with a game against Middleboro.
