SAUGUS — A 20-year-old Lynn man is facing charges after allegedly crashing into a storefront while fleeing from an earlier crash.
Alfredo Niz-Lopez was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a property damage crash, operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation, Saugus Police said.
On Friday morning at 4 a.m., Saugus Police responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Ballard Street. A woman informed police that she had been rear-ended at a red light and the vehicle that struck her from behind fled the scene, police said.
The women chased Niz-Lopez for a short while before he ended up crashing into the storefront at 529 Lincoln Ave. The suspect then attempted to flee the scene of the crash on foot but was taken into custody by Saugus Police, authorities said.
Niz-Lopez was transported to an area hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash. The injuries were determined to be non life-threatening, police said.
Chief of Police Michael Ricciardelli said he was happy that no one was seriously injured during the incident but wants to remind drivers that if they are in a crash and the other driver leaves the scene, they shouldn’t try to pursue the vehicle.
“They should call 911 and provide as much information as they can, and allow officers to investigate and work to locate them,” Ricciardelli said.
