ATTLEBORO — The St. Mary’s baseball team notched an important Catholic Central League win over the weekend, going on the road at taking down previously undefeated Bishop Feehan by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bishop Feehan High School. The Shamrocks came into the game as the No. 8-ranked baseball team in the state, but that didn’t phase the Spartans.
Aiven Cabral was the star of the game for the Spartans, contributing heavily to the win on both sides of the field. His main job was on the mound, and the junior righty pitched a seven-inning gem — allowing one run on just five hits with an impressive 14 strikeouts and only one walk. He threw 109 pitches to earn the victory, with 83 of them going for strikes.
Cabral also got the job done with the bat, helping his own cause by going 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and one RBI.
Jason Donohue (1-for-3) and Terence Moynihan (1-for-4) also added one RBI each in the win, while Deniel Ortiz (1-for-3) and Tommy Falasca (1-for-3) also added hits.
The Spartans got right to work in this one, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. A single and two hit batters loaded up the bases with no outs for Moynihan, who came up with a timely RBI single to put St. Mary’s ahead.
Cabral was red-hot to open the game, striking out five of the first six batters he faced. But Feehan finally responded in the bottom of the third, starting with a leadoff single from Adam Walker to get a man on base. Cabral proceeded to strike out the next two batters, but then Kevin Barrera stepped in and lined a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
But the Spartans answered right back in the top of the fourth. Falasca singled and was sacrificed over to second base for Donohue, who smacked an RBI single to put St. Mary’s up 2-1. Next up was Cabral, who laced an RBI double to left field to make it 3-1.
From there, it was all Cabral on the mound. He only allowed two hits over the final four innings, striking out seven batters over that span to seal the victory for the Spartans.
St. Mary’s (5-4) hosts St. Joseph’s Prep Monday afternoon (4) at Fraser Field.
