School Sports Roundup: Lily Newhall leads St. Mary’s softball to upset win over Austin Prep

Lily Newhall dominated in the circle for the St. Mary’s softball team Saturday morning, striking out 16 batters as the No. 8 Spartans upset their Catholic Conference foe, No. 3 Austin Prep, by a score of 10-2. Of Newhall’s 16 strikeouts, 12 came in the first four innings.

On the offensive side of things, Marina DiBiasio and Felicia D’Alessandro each had two RBI to lead the way. Alyssa Grossi and Anna Fringuelli each had one RBI.

St. Mary’s (4-1) hosts Arlington Catholic Monday evening (5).

SOFTBALL

KIPP 10, Tech 9

Hannah Calef had seven strikeouts in the loss for the Tigers.

Tech is now 1-3.

KIPP is now 2-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

Austin Prep 16, St. Mary’s 6

Zach Barden had four goals and one assist for the Spartans in the loss.

St. Mary’s (3-1) hosts Arlington Catholic Monday (5).

Peabody 13, Bishop Fenwick 3

The Tanners dominated from start to finish, capturing the Danish Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Jack Houlden took home game MVP honors after finishing with six goals and three assists, while Keenan Madden scored two goals. Anthony Bettencourt, Drew Lucas, Luke Buckley, Brady Carpenter and Cam Collins each scored one goal for the Tanners. 

Peabody (4-0) hosts Masconomet Monday (4).

For Fenwick, Manny Alvarez-Segee led the way with one goal and one assist. Liam Hill and Tyler Mullen each scored one goal.

Fenwick (0-3) hosts Matignon Monday (4).

Marblehead 15, Masconomet 8

The Magicians scored 10 of the final 12 goals of the game to take home the win and remain unbeaten on the season. 

Connor Cronin led the way with five goals, while Joshua Robertson scored three goals and Carter Laramie scored two. Miles Smith, Will Shull and Mark Paquette also added goals in the victory. 

Marblehead (4-0) travels to Danvers Thursday (4).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Marblehead 19, Masconomet 4

Maddie Erskine had three goals to lead the way for the Magicians, while Hadley Wales added one goal and one assist. Goalie Elizabeth Driscoll had an astounding 19 saves in the victory. 

Marblehead (3-0) hosts Danvers Thursday (4).

BOYS TRACK

Bishop Fenwick 94, Arlington Catholic 28
Bishop Fenwick 93, St. Joseph’s Prep 32

Wyatt Burr was a double-winner for the Crusaders, taking first in the 800-meter (2:10.8) and the two-mile (11:38.2). Other winners for Fenwick were Colby Browne in the 400 (53.2), Max Corson in the long jump (19-1/4), Aidan Dwyer in the triple jump (38-1/4), Ethan Tran in the 200 (23.7), Franklin Quintin in the discus (104-8) and Matt Juneau in the shot put (37-6).

Fenwick (3-0) runs against Austin Prep Tuesday (4).

Austin Prep 70, St. Mary’s 66

Anthony D’Itria finished first in both the high jump and the triple jump for the Spartans, while Kyle Kwiatek took first in the one-mile, Declan Dorgan took first in the 110 hurdles and Dan Gjeta took first in the shot put.

St. Mary’s (0-2) runs against Arlington Catholic and St. Joseph’s Prep Tuesday (4).

GIRLS TRACK

Arlington Catholic 72, Bishop Fenwick 50
Bishop Fenwick 90, St. Joseph’s Prep 6

The Crusaders had two double-winners on the day, with Breanna Benoit taking first in the 100 (13.2) and the 200 (28.0) and Julia Loescher winning the javelin (79-6) and the discus (90-0). Eliza Powers added a first-place finish in the 100 hurdles (18.4).

Fenwick (2-1) runs against Austin Prep Tuesday (4).

Austin Prep 108 1/2, St. Mary’s 18 1/2 

The lone winner for the Spartans was Michelle Azzun, who took first in the shot put. Juliana Taborda finished second in the 400 and Kelsey Kwiatek finished second in the one-mile.

St. Mary’s (0-2) runs against Arlington Catholic and St. Joseph’s Prep Tuesday (4).
